Theme 1: Exploration Opening New Frontiers and Emerging Plays
This theme explores the path from discovery to development in unproven regions. By de-risking the transition from data-poor frontier areas to validated emerging basins, the sessions provide the insights needed to convert early geological success into a comprehensive understanding of a region’s full commercial potential.
Sub-themes:
- Fold and Thrust Belt Exploration
- Deep and Ultra-Deep Water Exploration
- Overpressure Zone, Basin-Centered Gas
Theme 2: Exploration in Mature Basins and Future Potential
The sessions will focus on breathing new life into brownfield basins to offset the decline of conventional resources. Navigating the complexities of mature environments requires innovative approaches to maximize value. Our strategy emphasizes a four-fold path to success: revitalizing marginal prospects, bringing idle wells back online, unlocking fractured basement potential, and exploring deeper, untapped stratigraphic targets.
Sub-themes:
- Marginal Plays and Vitalization
- Reactivating Idle Wells: Identifying "Behind-Pipe" Opportunities
- Fractured Basement Reservoirs
- Older Stratigraphy and Greater Depth Exploration Targets
- EOR / EGR
Theme 3: Digital Transformation and Data Management
We are moving beyond siloed workflows into a new era of data-driven subsurface discovery. This digital evolution utilizes AI and cloud computing to eliminate tedious “data wrangling,” allowing teams to focus on high-impact predictive modeling and accelerated insights.
Sub-themes:
- Petroleum Data Management Best Practice
- Predictive Geomechanics
- Automated Logging and Interpretation for Core and Cutting Analysis
- AI-Enhanced Seismic Imaging and Interpretation
- AI Applications in Petrophysics Evaluation and Uncertainty Reduction
Theme 4: Unconventional Plays and Opportunities
As global energy demands shift, unconventional reservoirs—including coal-bed methane, shale gas, gas hydrates, and oil shale—have the potential to play an increasingly critical role in the energy landscape. This theme highlights emerging exploration hotspots and development frontiers and showcases the latest advancements and integrated strategies for evaluating, developing, and managing these complex reservoirs, with a focus on overcoming their unique technical and operational challenges.
Sub-themes:
- Exploration and Development Hotspots for Unconventional Resources
- Advanced Reservoir Characterization and Evaluation (Coal-Bed Methane; Shale Gas; Gas Hydrate; Oil Shale)
- Innovative Drilling, Completion, and Recovery Technologies
Theme 5: Basin Analysis and Petroleum Systems
This theme on fundamental techniques in exploration is relevant to topics characterizing key elements of basin analysis, as well as integrated studies and petroleum system modeling of kitchen-trap migration and accumulation.
Sub-themes:
- Sedimentology and Stratigraphy
- Structural Geology and Tectonics
- Biostratigraphy and Ichnology
- Source Rock and Petroleum Geochemistry
- Integrated Petroleum System Modelling
Theme 6: SEPM Research Symposium.
This symposium advances subsurface interpretation by bridging the gap between different depositional environments. By examining the relationship between deep-sea gravity flows and contourite drifts alongside high-resolution lacustrine studies, we are improving our ability to map stratigraphic architectures. These insights are vital for accurate reservoir prediction and paleoenvironmental mapping in both marine and continental settings.
Sub-themes:
- Seismic Geomorphology on Carbonate Siliclastic and Other Settings
- Contourite and Deep Ocean Sediment Waves – Lacustrine Source Rocks and Reservoirs of the World
- Tropical Carbonate System
- Channel Levee and Submarine Lobes in a Variety of Geological Settings
Theme 7: Energy Transition and CCS
This theme is a critical bridge between traditional fossil fuel expertise and the urgent demands of the energy transition. Discussions typically center on the subsurface characterization of depleted oil and gas reservoirs and saline aquifers, evaluating their capacity, containment integrity, and long-term geomechanical stability.
Sub-themes:
- Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
- Seal Integrity and Monitoring Technology
- Natural Hydrogen
- Geothermal-Petroleum Synergies
- Critical Minerals for Energy Transition
